Eight Abbotsford Police officers have been recognized for their work in reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road.
The officers are members of Alexa’s Team, named for Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by an impaired driver in 2008 when she was four years old.
The team consists of RCMP and municipal officers committed to reducing the number of impaired-driving deaths in B.C.
New measures were enacted in 2010 to combat drinking and driving in B.C., including the immediate roadside prohibition program.
Officers must complete a minimum of 12 impaired-driving investigations in a year in order to qualify for the team.
Alexa’s Team members from the Lower Mainland were honoured at the Justice Institute of B.C. on April 12 for their work in reducing alcohol-related crashes.
Two Abbotsford Police constables – Jon Courtney and John Davidson – were recognized as “All Stars” for taking at least 34 criminally impaired drivers off the road last year.
Other Abbotsford officers honoured were: constables Myles Krauchy, Phillip Sawatsky Christopher Troughton, Chris Froese, Renae Williams and Michael Oakman.
Together, the Abbotsford officers removed a total of 197 impaired drivers from the road in 2016.
