Outdoorsy couple in Agassiz hopes to win dream wedding
Tammy Wood and Jason Alexander’s house is surprisingly quiet considering that there are nine children at home ranging in age from three to 15.
And yes, it’s normal, says Wood.
The house didn’t used to be quite so full. In 2009, before the two had even met, Wood suddenly became a single mom after her husband was killed in a workplace accident. She was the mother of five children, with another on the way.
For two years she raised her six kids by herself in Agassiz. She had some help from family, friends, counsellors, and even complete strangers, but while she was busy keeping her children happy without a father, Wood forgot about making herself happy. She started to get lonely.
She approached a friend and told her that she wanted to go out for coffee with someone. She wanted to go on a date and have an adult conversation.
Her friend had someone in mind and, through Facebook, they connected. Wood and Alexander hit it off instantly.
Over the course of a year, they fell in love and last summer on a boat out in the middle of Harrison Lake, Alexander proposed to Wood.
She said “yes”.
Then one morning last month as Wood was watching the morning news on Global TV, she saw a contest they were offering to win a dream wedding in Mexico.
“I thought for everything that I’ve been through over the years, if anyone deserves it, I do,” says Wood.
She entered the contest and wrote to them about her life since the death of her husband, and how she met Alexander.
“Planning a wedding has been a daunting task financially. I am on a WCB widow pension and Jason has been temporarily unable to work due to an illness,” she wrote. “With a large family to support, and a wedding to plan, it would be a dream come true to win this dream wedding in Mexico.”
The station chose the couple as one of the top 10 finalists for its contest. The $20,000 grand prize is an all-inclusive, seven-day trip to Cancun, Mexico with a wedding for the couple plus 10 guests.
With Alexander’s four daughters, plus Wood’s six children, that would mean a free trip for the whole family.
There’s Morgan, 18, Georgia, 15, Bronsen, 14, Emily, 13, Hailey, 12, Faith, 10, Jesse, 8, Jake, 6, Breanna, 5, and Camryn, 3.
And they all get along.
“The blending of the families was easy and important,” says Alexander. “As soon as the kids met Tammy, it was very easy and quick that they bonded with her. Everybody gets along with everyone, from the oldest to the youngest.”
“We both love children,” says Wood. “His personality and how he is with the kids just comes naturally.”
The two have a lot in common, which is why they’re so well matched for each other.
“I think the biggest thing is that we have a love for a lot of the same things. We love the outdoors, we both love dogs, we both love to cook, and we both love fishing. We’re big foodies,” says Wood.
“The outdoors was a big thing for me,” says Alexander. “I never thought I’d get married again, and I thought I’d be single for a while. But when I met Tammy, it was something that clicked right away.”
“She’s cute, she’s gorgeous, she’s a good person. She’s a great mom, and a great partner. Everybody loves her,” he adds.
The two are tying the knot this year regardless of whether or not they win the contest.
The Win a Dream Wedding contest will be won by whichever couple has the most online votes. Wood and Alexander have spread the word to their family and friends, and are hoping that others in the Chilliwack and Agassiz areas will vote for them, too.
In addition, anyone who votes has a chance to win a trip for two to Mexico.
To help Wood and Alexander win their dream wedding with their 10 children in Mexico, and for a chance to win a trip yourself, vote for them online.
Voting is open until Jan. 27 at 11:59 p.m., and the winner will be announced on Jan. 29.
